Quick update, I have a solution. Seems that it was mainly user error on my part.
Whilst I use my Touch in standalone mode with a USB HDD, I do have a network available. However, as I'd stopped running Squeezecentre on my home PC, I'd not bothered setting up a link to Squeezebox.com. Did that lastnight and the Touch was promptly very happy to go into standby.
