Thanks for the replies - I have been doing a lot of testing and have finally come up with the cause of this.
It is the power-line network link that the Touch uses. Specifically my girlfriend's hair straightening tongs caused the network to stop dead whilst they were being used. I still believe there is a problem with SBS or the Touch though since once this has happened after a certain amount of time the situation seems to cause SBS to crash - the service just seems to stop. This must be when all the other Squeezeboxes (not connected via the power-line adapter) also complain about having no connection.
