The plugging in - unplugging part should only be necessary for the
initial scan, from then on you should just be able to leave it
connected all the time. Thats the way it was designed to work. The
problem is the people that WANT to plug and unplug many times a day.

Your initial attempts at playing during the initial scan have a high
probability of corrupting the database, did you delete it (the
.Squeezebox directory) before attempting again?

After the initial scan, any subsequent attachment (with the Touch on)
will let you look at the scan progress. If you haven't added anything
new it will show a files scanned completed message. If it needs any
further processing it will say something along the lines of "found 5
new files", then its going to do the next two phases on those 5 new
files. If it doesn't find any new ones, it will just say files scanned
completed. If you don't see a "found new files" message you can start
playing music.

This is why I recommend plugging the drive in with the Touch ON, you
CAN tell when the scan is finished. If the drive is attached when the
Touch is booted there is no way to tell when the scan is finished.

Yep I agree, the initial scan message gives no indication that there is
more to go, it should say something like completed phase 1 of 3 phases,
at least you know there is more to come!
