I had the same problem. I managed to solve it by deleting the .squeezebox file on the usb drive and rescanning. I am inclined to agree with you about the touch having one too many problems: I am running out of patience for spending time fiddling. I am fed up with using it with a usb drive and am trying out a NAS.
