Yes. Will it work? That's unknown. I assume you're talking about a bus powered drive, i.e. a drive that can be powered directly from a USB connection to a PC and doesn't require an additional power adapter plugged into the wall. The collective experience has been that some drives work OK without additional power, but some do not. > When I connect my laptop via ethernet to it, I have to prompt the HDD > into life, so how doe I go about "waking it up" if I connect directly > to the Touch? That's been one of the problems that some people are having with USB drives. How do you 'prompt' the drive from the laptop to wake it up? The way I understand that it should work is that if the hard drive goes to sleep, it should only spin down the disk but still remain connected to the Touch. When the Touch attempts to access files on the drive then it's supposed to spin up again and be available in a couple of seconds. That hasn't been the case with many drives. Some users are finding that when a drive goes into sleep mode the Touch loses its connection with it and the internal server stops running. > I did try yesterday when I got it, to try and connect the HDD directly, > and it showed all the albums in the HDD, but would not open the files > to enable it to play. What showed all the albums? Where did you see them? If the Touch recognizes the drive it should start the internal server and begin scanning the drive by itself. It's not necessary to manually start a scan. You'll probably find that you can't use the internal server during the initial library scan, which may take hours. After the initial scan, there will be a much quicker scan done whenever you connect a USB drive or power up the Touch with one connected. -- JJZolx Jim ------------------------------------------------------------------------ JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=79052 _______________________________________________ Touch mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
