You should report this to the bug i think. As you had tested the same HDD with same files and the only diff is the total amount of files, very well defined case. Someone logitech did test over USB, but i'll bet they just stuck some files on a stick and tried with that. Btw is the LaCie powered by USB or does it have it's own PS ?
