While I don't use them for music, I have 2 units of AppleTV that I like
a lot.

I think their biggest issue (aside limited internal storage space if
you're synching with iTunes) is that the platform draws well over 10W
at all time.

The hard drive chirps from time to time, so it is not completely
silent. Adding another usb drive will likely increase the noise level.
You could perhaps want to access a networked drive ?

Of course you are tied to using iTunes (unless hacking the device) but
you know that already. If you hack you can do more things but I am not
sure that you'd be able to harness the extra capabilities/storage with
the remote application for iphone.

ATV OS 3.0 is for me a non-event. Due to the way I have purposed my
units, I actually chose to downgrade my most recent ATV from stock OS
3.0 to OS 2.4. There is a documented hack for that.
This last "refurbished" ATV I got was a white-boxed, new, unit of the
now discontinued 40GB model.

My conclusion: nice, but hack, hack, hack. (and the pool of
"developers" is waning somewhat)
