While I don't use them for music, I have 2 units of AppleTV that I like a lot.
I think their biggest issue (aside limited internal storage space if you're synching with iTunes) is that the platform draws well over 10W at all time. The hard drive chirps from time to time, so it is not completely silent. Adding another usb drive will likely increase the noise level. You could perhaps want to access a networked drive ? Of course you are tied to using iTunes (unless hacking the device) but you know that already. If you hack you can do more things but I am not sure that you'd be able to harness the extra capabilities/storage with the remote application for iphone. ATV OS 3.0 is for me a non-event. Due to the way I have purposed my units, I actually chose to downgrade my most recent ATV from stock OS 3.0 to OS 2.4. There is a documented hack for that. This last "refurbished" ATV I got was a white-boxed, new, unit of the now discontinued 40GB model. My conclusion: nice, but hack, hack, hack.
