Thanks everyone for your advice. 

It sounds like a wirelessly accessed NAS might not be such a good idea
then. I want to try a hard wired connection from SBS to Touch so I
think the getting the quietest HDD is the way to go. 

And Inguz doubts mean Atom may not be good enough. I hadn't really
considered building a higher power server but I think this might a good
thing to do, with a 2.5" 1TB HDD acoustically treated it should be
near-enough silent? 

Certainly cheaper and more configurable than a Mac Mini, and cheaper
than a new Tranquil PC. (The benefit of the Tranquil PC is silence, is
it a price worth paying..?)

The newly released quad core AMD 45W Athlon II X4 610e looks
interesting, the Intel i3-530 is 73W, which swings it in the AMD's
favour. Anyone know if the AMD could be passively cooled?
