If your music files are grouped well and you do not need their
album/artist/whatever search, but simply want to browse and play your
music, try my way.
There is nothing to lose.
First set up the touch and connect to squeezebox.com to get the correct
time and so on. You can even put in a small empty hard drive and let it
do the scan once (should be fairly quickly).
Then follow this direction

to disable autorescan.
Finally bring on your music collection. After attaching the usb drive,
choose start squeezebox server. There will be no scanning and the
server seems not fully up, but it is. Now browse your music through
music folder and you can browse to play music and show the cover arts
as well.
I just install a new drive with all my music, and did the set up.
Everything works just fine. No scanning is made. Artworks and musics
are all well presented. Now every time you attach a different drive you
do not need to wait 8+ hours to complete the scanning. Nor do you need
to worry about large embedded cover arts. I think remove large cover
arts from some 50,000 files is more difficult than what I proposed.

If it does not work, simply reset the device and follow their
directions.
