Thanks for your answer.

Yes, hopefully somebody has a pointer for an "iTunes library cleaner" to
remove or compress the album art... :-)

There are 2 reasons why I still want to keep the ITunes format for the time
being:

1) I also have an iPod (which I use mainly for listening to podcasts when
I'm in my car.) - I have looked at removing the iPod firmware and replacing
it with Rockbox, but find the GUI of Rockbox not convenient for listening to
the latest podcasts...

2) I am using iTunes to download the latests podcasts as mp3 such that I can
later hear them in the car.

For point (2): What would really be great: If one could have a script
running on the Touch actually doing these regular updates of podcast mp3
downloads into the library.
Once that would exist, I could update the iPod from the touch's USB disk
(rsync? maybe then it would indeed be required to run the iPod under Rockbox
... )
The pleasure of getting rid of iTunes for downloading podcasts (it's really
poor at doing that...) would even be worth accepting the poorer GUI of
Rockbox!

Or, other solution: Once there is a well working script to download podcasts
to the Touch, I buy a 2nd touch for the car :-)

Regarding Green: Yes, exactly thats what I loved about the USB powered
drive... the whole setup consumes almost nothing! If I could in addition
configure the drive to spin down when it's not used - then I would certain
do that as well and bring power consumption further down. The ARM processor
of the touch shouldn't consume a lot. The only alternative I had in mind was
an Mac Mini, apparently they consume less than 10W in standby (?) as well.
But thats quite an expensive solution compared to doing everything that
needs to be "always on" directly on the Touch...
