Hi,

I had a longstanding issue with my Touch. I could not mount remotely
the USB drive attached to it from my WinXP and Linux PCs.
I decided to investigate, so I remotely log-in via SSH.

The first issue I found was that smbd was not started. The log file
complained that the pid file did exist and it was assuming that smbd
was already running. I removed the pid file and ran "/etc/init.d/samba
restart", and now I could see smbd in the process list.

After that, I changed the workgroup in /etc/samba/smb.conf.dist to
be the workgroup used by my other PCs. Not only it look nicer, but it
also make browsing the touch and its shares faster. I would love for
such option to be added to the GUI...

The second issue was that the password used by samba was not the
password displayed in the GUI. I don't know if the GUI failed to set
the samba password, or if the samba password was reset during one of my
reboot.
As I did not remember the original samba password, I re-set it using
"smbpasswd root".

After that, I can mount the USB drive on both WinXP and Linux, and
everything seems to work fine. I'll see if it survive my next
reboot...

I hope this will help a fellow users. And I hope the developers will
find better workaround...

Regards,

Jean
