OK - thanks everyone. Forcing the firmware back to 7.5.2 r8837 seems to have fixed it. I had to connect a USB keyboard to get enough control over the UI to do this.
I don't know if it was actually the latest 7.6 firmware that caused this? When I have more time, I'l try updating back to that and see if the problem reappears. Many thanks again to those who helped.
