Many years ago, they published a very negative review of a Crown power
amplifier. Crown threw a fit. Instead of standing behind the review,
they rereviewed the amplifier, citing disagreement, saying it was fine.
I believe the editor also said he listened to the amplifier, thought it
was fine, and put it in class B recommended components. Soon after, the
original reviewer stopped appearing on the masthead. After that, I
stopped seeing any negative reviews in Stereophile, while seeing
numerous excellent reviews of products I knew firsthand to be
terrible.

Since I largely stopped reading Stereophile after that, I can't say
they've never published a negative review, but I browse it often enough
to see they must be few and far between (how can that be in a field like
high-end audio where there is such variation in product philosophy,
quality, and, to be honest, where any crackpot can put out an expensive
product?). In addition, there is an incredibly high correlation with
Stereophile's review rankings and price, which doesn't pass the smell
test.

There is one exception, though, which makes Stereophile highly
valuable, and why I continue to look at it as much as I do. Each review
is accompanied by a quite good measurements section that is invaluable
and often available nowhere else. I would recommend ignoring their
subjective review (not that I always discount subject reviews, but
Stereophile's are almost always favorable, so they convey little useful
information), but definitely read their measurement sections.
