The TOSLINK and S/PDIF run off the same wire, so the only way to "turn
off" the TOSLINK while still keeping the S/PDIF is a hardware
modification.

The USB is enabled by modifying the ALSA config file. The easiest way
to do it is to just send the music to the USB port. The default
configuration has the same stream copied to both the digital out and
analog out. Its certainly possible to add the USB to this scheme so you
have the music going to all three outputs, but its a MUCH more
complicated file, which takes up more CPU etc.

Its VERY easy to strip out the "copy the stream" stuff in the ALSA
config so you just send it to which ever output you want. I haven't
done any listening to that to see if it sounds any better though.

True turning off unused outputs takes hardware surgery, the chips
always have power and clock applied. Not sending any data to one or the
other MAY be audible, but its certainly not the same as really turning
off the output.
