I think the idea of forcing a network connection is to facilitate the
Touch getting the latest Firmware update from either SBS on your
computer or MySB online.
But I agree with you that a "standalone" device that is supposed to be
completely usable with only a USB drive should not require a network
connection.

There is a way to update the Touch via the SD card, but I've never
messed with that myself.

Best I can suggest is to just connect it to your network (WiFi or
wired) when required, like after resets, until you get the USB portion
stable enough to not need these temporary network connections.  The
best and simplest solution is to just let it connect to your WiFi for
now, assuming you have WiFi.  ;)
