Both these definitely sound like something wrong with the hardware. The LED going on then going off COULD be a bad power supply, it works, but can't handle the full load. If you don't have a known working supply to test for the supply, I would just send the whole thing back.
This is NOT proper behavior, something is physically wrong. Its not just something that rebooting or new firmware can fix. Unfortunately it sounds like you need to send it back.
