I am not a Touch owner (yet...), but here is an observation on your post: The Touch is a very good network music player, and provides a RUDIMENTARY music server feature. I think as long as your server needs are modest, the Touch can serve them well. On the other hand, the Squeezebox platform has the capability to provide several additional features, which unfortunately require additional server resources. The resources on the Touch are apparently near the limit providing the necessary player features, plus the limited server features. I would say your next logical step would be to start running a full-fledged server on some sort of PC. I can understand your desire to "want no external server", but if you want to experience the additional features available with the Squeezebox platform, that external server is your best bet. The next logical step is adding additional players so that you can enjoy your music collection in other areas of your house. That should still work OK with the Touch server, but you need to add some networking capabilities. At that point, it's not too much of a stretch to consider adding a server somewhere in your house (in a closet somewhere?). That then opens up the capability to allow you to run the various third-party plugins available for the Squeezebox, like weather apps, library enhancement utilities (e.g., custom browse), allows transcoding so you can access more internet radio streams. Bottom line - the Touch's server provides an initial "straight out of the box" capability, but the addition of an external server can enable many additional features and capabilities. As a side note, I notice you say your rips are MP3... you may want to consider moving to lossless file formats. At least for future rips, I would suggest using something like FLAC. That way you know you're not losing any quality which was on your CD, and you can always transcode to mp3 if you want smaller files for portable players.
