For reliable WOL, you may need to set up the PC Bios, and make some simple changes in the O/S power options. Exact changes will depend on your NIC and operating system flavours. 10 minutes on Google should get you most of the way there. Its also a good idea to have the target PC/server hard wired to your router (homplugs are also fine IME), which is a good idea anyways to minimise 'wireless hops'. If you have an Iphone plenty free WOL apps are also available to test things out. I used 'Awake' app when setting up.
