... or at least got it running again. I connected the ext HD (on which the iTunes and SB libraries reside) to a bigger/faster iMac, loaded SBS, then did a simple rescan, and now it plays fine on my old G4. This suggests that my old G4 iMac is inadequate to the task... I'll replace it soon.
I'm not sure how/why the problem went away, I'm just going to listen to the music. I'm extremely happy to have my Touch running again. The sound is absolutely sublime vs. my CD player.
