Just leave the VBA running 24/7. It really doesn't use that much electricity and makes life easier. You could also explore using WOL function and serverpowercontrol plugin that will automatically do some power management. I do none of this...I just leave VBA running all the time.
Re FLAC rips, people have different opinions on the value of ripping a 16/44.1 to something else.
