I had the same symptoms. Mine turned out to be a firewall issue. It was solved when I changed the advanced firewall settings under Security Prefs by adding (through selecting the '+' icon) and adding System Preferences to services that allow incoming connections. I surmise this allowed the firewall to peek at the Squeezebox Server preference settings
