What I'm trying to determine is if the problem is the driver not
handling the asynchronous interface correctly, or if its something else
such as general busyness causing under-runs.

There are two crystals in the Touch, one used for 44.1 and 88.2 and the
other for 48 and 96. If the problem is the asynchronicity not working
correctly the ticks will be caused by the DAC clock being at a slightly
different frequency than the Touch clock. The difference between DAC and
touch clocks will be different with the two crystals. Sooo if the
problem is the feedback not working properly the rate or patterns of
ticks should change when going from 44.1 to 48.

If it doesn't change when changing sample rates, then its something.
Its very important to make this determination so we can focus our
attention on the right things.
