D*mn, I did some extra experimenting this afternoon, just before packing it and it worked ok with a headphone??? Turns out one of the inputs on my amps is defect. The good news I've got music, the other inputs are still okay, the bad news of course is that my beloved perfect amp, a 12 year old primare A30, is no longer perfect. I was hoping we could get old together in good health, but if one of us is going to have a defect inner part, well, better that it is him ;)
