Thanks garym! That was it. I needed to clear and rescan instead of search for new music. Is that a bug in the Squeezebox server? And yes I am able to play the flac files in foobar2000.
New issue related to this though --- the live show tagger that I used tagged the files so that the live concert shows up as a separate folder than in its artist folder even though the artist is the same and the artist name is in the new tag. Also, the sqeezebox touch is not recognizing the artist name at all - it says "no artist" despite having the artist name in the folder name. It did read all of the song titles correctly.
