Hi. There has been a review on ethernet cables in one of the biggest German audio magazine called Stereo.
They pretty much concluded that ethernet cables can make a pretty huge difference! Looking at the expected responses in this thread so far the myth that ethernet cables won't have any impact on the receiver needs to get busted. There are several sources around that subject causing certain issues. Those sources are not directly linked to the actual data values. Everybody should know that the ethernet "data" transfer is lossless. Which doesn't mean that this happens "effortless". The non linear stream ( e.g. caused by different load conditions), the stream management on the receiver and even HF noise fed into the receiver are potential sources for (indirect) distortions. ( Did you ever experience what a loose fit RJ45 can do to your sound?) In above mentioned review a german company called Meicord found out that a. the way a typical ethernet cable is terminated at the receiving end is causing severe reflections due to impedance mismatch b. that crosstalk effects might also have an impact (they compared different cables with different specs) c. unshielded vs. shielded cable consistantly sounded different (the shield builds a ground bridge into the receiver) The result of that review was that the unshielded Meicord cables consistently sounded far superior than all the other cables in the review. I'm currently using DRAKA UC900 with Hirose TM31 connectors (CAT6A). I cut off the cable shield at the receiver side to avoid a ground bridge. The review also stated that a. such a difference would not been expected and b. that explaining exactly what's causing the difference would be kind of difficult. The experienced differences on different cables though, are unquestionbale. I'm gonna get a set of Meicords next week for testing. I'll let you know about my findings. And after all wire still beats wireless (if you use my toolbox) Cheers -- soundcheck 'soundcheck's Touch Toolbox 2.0' (http://soundcheck-audio.blogspot.com/2011/01/soundchecks-squeezebox-touch-toolbox-20.html) || 'soundcheck's Touch Toolbox - Beta Blog' (http://soundcheck-audio.blogspot.com/2011/01/soundchecks-tt-beta-blog.html) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ soundcheck's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=34383 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82269 _______________________________________________ Touch mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
