Just wanted to add I have had exactly the same problems with artwork as described here and an update to the following file on my touch has restored my artwork.
http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.6.0/fab4_7.6.0_r9316.bin I now get random crashes of the server which I didn't get before but I hope that will get ironed out... My set-up: Squeezebox touch, western digital 1TB USB drive, 10,000 mp3s all with embedded artwork (no separate jpegs).
