I seriously think you should always know exactly how many files you
have. In saying that, I'm assuming you care about it and would not want
to lose any part of it.

Even with a rock-solid backup regime, you will sooner or later want to
know that all of your files are indeed accessible via the Touch
menus....and that some have not mysteriously vanished.


No-one is being unhelpful here, they are just pointing out - with
significant collective wisdom and experience - a few things:

1) You should not NEED to fragment your collection over several drives,
unless you have more than 2Tb of files

2) If you are connecting a USB disk to a Touch, it should not have
other (non-music) files on it.

3) It is a very good idea to keep a close eye on how many songs/files
you have in your collection.
