Does your home network have a router? You might check that. 

Is the SoftSqueeze player on the same machine as the server or a
different box? 

Are you using the router's DHCP for IP assignment? You want consistent
use of addresses within your network. 

I'm a Fedora Core user (which comes with the firewall turned on), so am
not familiar with Ubuntu beyond general Linux basics.
