It's not so much that it literally "applies them" to other files... it's building a database from the tags it finds in your files and sometimes that means it has to make some awkward choices. Say for example you have 2 tracks by Bob Dylan (according to the ARTIST tags) - on the same album or different albums - but on one it finds an ARTISTSORT tag of "Dylan, Bob" and on another it finds one of "Bob Dylan"... it has to choose one to use, because it knows there is only 1 artist called Bob Dylan... and he can't be sorted under BOTH "B" & "D".
