I'll give an example off what can be achieved with switches and static ip.
As others said if one uses true static ip ( not dhcp reservation ) you can build the entire lan with only switches. That is a local area network ,you then add a router for internet acess and then add an acces piont for wifi or use the router for wifi. i use 3 switches and an old Linksys WRT54GL router with Tomato firmware. Something that can be buggier and more dysfunctional than a squeezebox is routers, so I use routers that can run 3rd party software as DD-WRT or Tomato ( there are orhers ). My network: Ethernet cable from ISP to router . Connected to routers wifi: Squeezebox Radio and Squeezebox controller ( sometimes a netbook ) with static ip. iPad and on occasion my work laptop on dhcp. Conected to a lan port on the router: A 4 port gigabit switch ( switch 1 ) with a short cable. >From switch 1 I have ethernet cables trough my apartment to switch 2 and switch 3 , these are 8 port gigabit switches. A switch is nothing but a box that can connect several ethernet cables together all ports are inputs and outputsat the same time, it has no setting and is transparent to the network so it has no ip on it's own, you just connect cables to it. Switch 2 in my "office" : Everything here has static- ip !! Server , mini-itx Linux ( ClarkConnect ) 3TB of disc space, this is my Squeezeboxserver. Desktop PC running ubuntu linux. Squeezebox BOOM in the same room. IP phone ( not working yet ) my kitchen Squeezebox 3 (aka Squeezebox classic ) ,long ethernet cable trough some more walls. Switch 3 in my hifi rack in the living room: Static ip ofcourse !! Squeezebox Touch iTach ir module for my remote controll ap on my iPad. iTach rs232 module. To be added later, a "TV" vod something ? Box and maybe a game consol.
