Yes USB has power issues far to many USB powered drives brake the specs or act up in other ways
Using the Touch as server has other limits to as no web interface or plugins or transcoding. Some reading for you , note that some details may have changed, in true squeezebox spirit the documentations s*cks :) (these links are an exception this part of the wiki is good) just don't have a heart attack over it.
