I'm not getting the "nil" part of the problem, and indeed all now seems to be running fine. I say seems. The Touch is new to me, so I don't know whether a few Menu quirks are bugs / faults, or just that I haven't got it set up quite correctly yet. Mine seemed to be an Initial Setup problem - that I either wasn't offered or skipped past the MySB setup options.
