You can get noise through an ethernet cable even if both ends have
transformers. The transformers in question are broadband RF devices,
the only thing they block is low frequency noise, high frequency noise
goes right on through and can get coupled into the ground plane of the
remote device, even with transformers.

Another issue really honestly is packet jitter. When a packet arrives
at the touch a bunch of stuff happens decoding it, this creates noise
on the groundplane with a certain spectrum. If those packets arrive in
a steady stream with time between packets fairly uniform you will get a
different spectrum than if the time between packets varries all over the
place. I've been able to actually measure this.

Now if that groundplane noise spectrum makes any difference in sound is
a completely different issue. And if it does, which sounds better, the
precisely timed or the randomly timed packets, I have no idea.

I have measured the groundplane noise on my Linksys WRT54GL and the
Netgear FS105 switch, the noise in the router is WAY worse than in the
switch.

In my system the server and the Touch both run off the same netgear
FS108 switch, primarily because thats how it worked out, they are in
different rooms and I only wanted to run one wire back to the room with
the router. Maybe I should try running everything off the router and see
if that makes things worse.
