If I had a suitable car, I would consider an SB Touch solution for
everyday use. I would probably rely on a carputer with an SSD disk to
run LMS and serve the audio to the Touch via Ethernet, though. For a
competition where a judge is supposed to insert some random USB stick,
you probably need more processing power and file bandwidth than the
Touch can deliver on its own, if you want it to be snappy.

Why do you consider a carputer risky? All you need (in addition to the
Touch) is a simple 'puter with an SSD disk, capable of booting and
running LMS at some speed, an Ethernet connection, and a USB port for
the judge's thumbdrive.

You then set up a script that copies all audio files from the USB to
your music folder on the SSD as soon as it's plugged in. (Or you can
mount the USB as your music folder.) Then you're free to browse "My
music folder" in the Touch's UI and play what you want, no scanning
required.
