Yes there is normally no problem doing this . I have no problems with
it.

The ways to definitely break this is.

Playing directly on the Touch via the usb port.

using a server that can't handle the transcoding like the OP does, he
has a NAS of some kind.

if your server can do transcoding all is ok.
