i'm a foobar2000 user as well, but I do use tags a lot as I use the
facets component.

Install mp3tag.  Open folders of interest (or even all folders if your
naming structure is really good....obviously test a bit first).

with selected files in your active window in mp3tag, right click,
select them, then choose "convert" from upper menu, then "filename >
tag"

This allows you to enter a string that captures the data you want from
the file name or directory location and move that to various things
(like album, track #, etc.  Hard to describe here, and it may take a
bit to get the hang of how it works, but if you play around you'll
figure it out. There is a "help" button on the popup, and there are
scripting functions as well.

If you're only talking about a few dozen CDs that you want to identify
the master source, I'd simply open the CDs in mp3tag, right click on
the album tracks, and edit the album name.
