I've used my home built small Linux server OS on ssd two music drives 1tb and 2 tb . 1,2Ghz CIA c7 x86 CPU 1GB of ram. For years now .
IMHO go for a machine with a x86 CPU it give additional overhead to run all transcoding operations. Some formats are not natively supported on players but LMS can fix that . Some of the latest better arm CPU can do all but the lame codec with some linux command line tricks one can install shine instead, but it does not have the same quality . More CPU makes UI snappier and then you have the WEB-UI and possibility of plugins some plugins use CPU . But again even a very low power NAS improves on Touch as it also have to run the player software. touch is an arm CPU 700mHz 128mB ram . The vortex box is a cool idea , as it run a normal Linux distro and can actually run any other Linux distro to, the upgrade and maintenance aspect is much easier . Most NAS is dependent on the NAS vendor to make an upgraded package of the server, Ready NAS is package is built by logitech . Some NAS is actually supported by third party people doing it on thier spare time. But this time QNAP surprised every one by lagging just 1-2 days behind when 7.7.2 came out. Synology also actively maintain their own package of LMS but how fast they are ? No idea . Some Squeezeboxserver add ons to some NAS can be years old ? And of course there are NAS when no one is building an easy to install LMs package avoid this, unless you have that programmer/Linux skill set to do it. There is no obvious choice NAS gives you a bit less CPU and memory for the money but they do bundle in a lot of cool functions, so I would weight in how easy it is to maintain and use and install LMS on,and if some of the other stuff it comes with is useful . Possibility to expand with more hard drives is one thing . I would not use RAID at home , you need a real backup anyway. -- Mnyb -------------------------------------------------------------------- Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH 2 x MeridianDSP5200 MeridianDSP5200HC 2 xMeridianDSP3100 +Rel Stadium 3 sub.
