Usually the reason for not using FLAC is iTunes, that group of people
are larger than the lunatic fringe in audio by a very very large number
, so aiff is often used .
(You could of course make 16/44.1 aiffs and they are extremely likely to
sound the same )

To attract more customers, squeezebox need to be less buggy with other
lossles formats.

There are plugins to make WMP handle FLAC ,so wmal support is less
important .

If you have a server which are up to the transcoding task, the problem
IS solved just as octavist said transcoding lossles formats are by
nature lossles too ( why expect anything else )
