I don't like to tweak either, thus my reason for using Squeezebox stuff.
Back before I had SB players, I used a small computer with USB out to a
good DAC. But even then, it was never clear to me that my WinXP machine
and soundcard wasn't doing some sort of 44.1 > 48 conversion.  And I do
use multiroom, so going back to that would be a problem for me. 

And as far as I know, they don't make a SSD large enough to hold my
music collection (70,000 mostly FLAC tracks and I'm only halfway done
ripping my CDs). I need several TB of disk space.

this said, if I was to return to a computer player with USB, I'd
probably build it around a FitPCi. Small, powerful, and silent.
