To hear such dramatic differences you must be one of those with golden ears and a very revealing system. If that is the case, I can't fathom why you would want to (a) have a hard drive in you listening room, unless it is a truly silent SSD, and (b) run the SBT's built-in server, which people who can hear difference generally agree gives poorer sound quality because the SBT is working too hard.
You've already determined you like the streaming sound best, so I think a better solution would be to use a dedicated low-horsepower pc for your streaming needs, and locate it somewhere outside your listening room, wired to your router.
