When I recently posted that I was going to run an Squeezebox Touch with
some of the music files on an SD card, a couple of people posted that
they would be interested in how I got on. In addition, JJZolx suggested
that SDXC cards might be used instead of SDHC which have a 32GB limit.

So, I got a SanDisk 64GB SDXC card, formatted it to FAT32 (using the
excellent FAT32format utility), put some music on it (in FLAC format),
and tried it. It worked with absolutely no problems; although I only
had about 3GB of music on it. I then decided to try and test the 32GB
limit. So I reformatted the card, and shoved a whole mass of
arbitrarily chosen files onto the card (actually avoiding music files to
try and speed things up - Windows directories - Program files dirs etc)
to bring the usage up to 31GB. I then added the music files used
earlier, as they were known to play fine, which I reckoned should span
the 32GB limit. Copying the files to the card took hours (my desktop PC
is a very ordinary i3-2120/4GB device), and scanning them on the SbT
took even longer (I gave up and went to bed and left it to it...). But,
today I have been playing all of the files on that card perfectly
happily.

This means that I can use a USB stick and a SDXC card, with different
folder structures for different music, with a very neat and compact
little player. Currently I have 64GB SanDisk items for both, but by the
end of the winter I will probably replace them both with 256GB versions
(unless 512GB is available at reasonable prices - 1TB in a year to 15
months perhaps). That will then be a very tidy little music player.

In fact, I would say it is impossible to beat for quality, versatility
and value. Please Logitech can we have an SbT 5 or 7 (or 'Delphi' or
whatever name you like), with slightly bigger screens, 2 x USB (incl
v3.0), SDXC card slot and maybe micro-SD slot, faster processors (ARMs?)
and more RAM; yes the price would go up (2x -> 2.5x) but so what, it
would still be good value.

Anyway, the current (or late) SbT will still be good with 256GB USB
memory-stick and SD card.
