This is odd. Perhaps if you would supply more details about what system you have and how everything is hooked up, someone might be able to help you sort this out. Many of us set the preamp (or integrated amp) volume just a bit over the max listening volume with our less loud recordings and then use the SBT digital volume to adjust listening levels with each different album or track. No matter what volume control you use, it should not have the effect you describe.
