Reducing server load slightly, flac playback is not that hard on the server or the player ,but if you got more than one player transcoding could give significant loads ? this migth be fixable but i find the server more predicable in it's standard settings people regularly finds some corner cases where the transcoding of some other formats breaks due to these settings . Flac is asymetric it takes a lot less to decode than to encode this makes it possible to run on very weak players . The buffer on the Touch will last longer during network problems , interaction with some of the more cpu demanding plugins makes this a good thing as the server could be unresponsive at track changes and the player may live on the buffer . If you have a weak nas based server and makes it busy with the web-UI or some other activity this also helps and also server load on a weak nas would be significant for transcoding flac. Actually lossy formats are more demanding and involve more compromises ,here serverside transcoding could improve stuff in rare cases for example mp3 , the floating piont lame encoder on the server has better quality than the fixed piont mad implementation on the player ,but this does not show on all material , I see it as practicalities rather than absolute soundquality I tend to get the good stuff I own on mp3 in a bettter format eventually ,if the music demands it but it does not always matter . Reducing wlan/lan load is reason enough if you got more than one player as these settings are global and concern all players I would see little point in sending PCM to my radio when i use it in my bathroom (worst reception in my apartment ) as it imo does not hurt soundqality there is little need to actually change these settings from it's default ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=94512 _______________________________________________ Touch mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
