I occasionally download songs from amazon. not a problem. And I can play
them in itunes if I wish. And itunes store no longer sells songs with
DRM (the file protection that can limit your use of the songs).  I think
you're being a bit too paranoid about installing itunes. Don't believe
everything you read on the web about how itunes can *destroy* your music
files and take over your music.  It can if you set it to do so I
suppose, but you're not going to.   And besides, you do have complete
backups of all your music right?  No matter what you do, even if wrong,
you can always start over with your music backup.
