No, not a stupid question (and others have asked too).  Ikabob, on my
older Benchmark DAC I connected to Touch, it is also true that the DAC
stays on at all time because of the Touch being connected. So basically
the DAC has been on 24/7 for years with no negative outcomes.  If you
would really prefer it all to be truly off, I'd suggest a small power
strip with both the TOUCH and Benchmark attached. Then simply switch off
when not using.

Or, and not sure if this will work, my benchmark has a switch on the
front to go to optical input, s/pdif input, etc.  What if you simply set
that to the source that is NOT connected. Then this will probably let
the DAC go to sleep.  None of these approaches are "automatic"
unfortunately. But this is why I simply leave mine on 24/7. 

p.s. Glad you're enjoying the Benchmark. It is a nicely built unit and
the company stands by their products very well.
