The result of either method should be the same. Personally prefer using DHCP reservation on the router as its easier for me to keep track of the IP addresses used just by viewing the appropriate page in the router interface plus certain devices are given a reserved address but can also be used elsewhere on different networks without changing settings.
IMO both methods have their place, in fact its perfectly possible to use both on the same network for different devices.
