I had an optical cable at one time or another that was obviously faulty but borderline rather than completely broken. The upshot was it worked fine for a while then stopped working. But the cable did work with some devices but not others, it does seem that different combinations of deg CDs can be more susceptible to issues if you're optical cable is iffy.
Short version: try another cable.
