If you don't have any experience with Linux, I recommend setting up your laptop as dual-boot, so you can easily fall back to Win XP if you need to for certain tasks. Windows and Ubuntu live together very easily, and there are easy instructions for how to turn an existing Windows installation into a dual-boot Windows/Ubuntu setup. The biggest challenge for a lot of people is old computers tend to have full hard disks, and you'll need to clear some space to set up a partition for Ubuntu.
