Thanks, John.  Good to know that things are normal.

Anyway, I have gone back to using the iFi iLink DDC instead of directly
into the Esoteric.  Although the latter should theoretically be better,
I find that the sound with the iLink is slightly bigger and better. 
Also, it gives me the convenience of switching between coaxial (which I
have set the Esoteric to upsample to DSD) and toslink (2X upsampling,
digital filter off) for different music (coaxial mostly, with the
toslink mode for older pop and jazz stuff), and the slight periodic
pitch shift issue is slightly getting my attention in the wrong way when
I am listening.

Who knows, maybe I'll do it one or the other way now and then, and it is
great to have such option!
