How are you checking the tags? By far the best tagging application I've used is MP3Tag.
The way I use it to find issues like this is to open all tracks by that artist, hopefully your folder structure will make this easy, select all tracks and then open the extended tag window. This view is useful because it highlights any tag that has different values that you might expect to be the same and also the presence of any tags that might cause issues.
